Australia faces its most serious wave of foreign espionage ever from a series of “sophisticated foreign adversaries,” according to the country’s intelligence chief.
“More Australians are being targeted for espionage and foreign interference than at any time in Australia’s history – more hostile foreign intelligence services, more spies, more targeting, more harm,” said Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) director-general Mike Burgess.
In the past year alone, ASIO has tackled a significant spy network, spies targeting government officials, cops, and dissidents of foreign regimes, including one dual Iranian-Australian citizen just last week.
